Afternoon Tea at The Courtyard

Afternoon tea originates from the 1840s when Queen Victoria’s lady of the bedchamber Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford became bored of waiting for her supper, and so at around 4pm she asked for a tray of tea and cake with bread and butter. By the 1880s this had progressed into something more formal with ladies dressing for the occasion.

Bread fit for Royalty

At the Courtyard, we bake all of the bread for our ‘while you wait’ menu items on site as well as the rolls that accompany our soup. We are constantly looking for new ideas and new recipes to try. One of our favourite bread roll recipes is inspired by a Justin Gellatly recipe that he used to bake the 1000 buns served at the royal wedding of William and Kate in 2011.
